There are many ways to get involved with local politics and the Horsham Democratic Committee. Plus it’s easy. You do what you’re comfortable with. And every candidate appreciates all kinds of support.
Yard Signs
Putting a yard sign in your front yard is a simple way to declare your support for an idea or candidate. It can be as simple as a reminder to “Vote!” on Election Day. More commonly you’ve seen signs for individual candidates like Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz or former State Representative Rick Taylor. If you’d like to place a sign in your yard please contact us to make your request. We will be happy to make sure you find the yard signs you’d like.
Working on Election Day
One way to give back to the community is to help make sure that the election runs smoothly. If you’ve voted you remember the poll workers who coordinate the voting process and log you in when you vote. The Horsham Democratic Committee helps ensure that the polls are fully staffed. Each poll worker receives a stipend from the County for their work on Election Day. Poll workers must commit to working at the poll from open to closing. But you work with a good group of people to make the day all the more rewarding.
Another important task on Election Day is to greet your friends and neighbors as they enter the polls. It’s a final opportunity to introduce or remind voters of candidates they should support by handing them candidate information and addressing questions or issues voters may have. For example, many people are unaware of the status of the Willow Grove Air Base or have only heard rumors about it. By helping them understand the facts on different issues of concern you can have a dramatic impact on their vote.
Please contact us at 215-328-9104 or by email if you would like to learn more about working at the polls.
Phone Banking
Contacting voters by phone can be a very efficient way to remind voters of upcoming elections and understand what issues are most important. All candidates work to contact voters by phone during campaigns. The Horsham Democratic Committee also will be calling registered voters as part of our “Get Out The Vote” efforts. Please let us know if you are interested in joining our phone-banking efforts.
Canvassing
Going door-to-door to speak with voters, known as canvassing, is one of the most important steps candidates use to educate voters. As you would expect there are many more voters than a single candidate can reach through canvassing. This is especially true for statewide and federal candidates. The Horsham Democratic Committee supplements candidate efforts by contacting voters and speaking with them directly to make sure they know which candidates we support and why. Your opinion and the information you provide is critical to voter decision-making. You can play a critical role in the outcome of elections by helping out even if only for a few hours. You’ll meet many neighbors you might not otherwise see. People are very open generally to learning more about upcoming elections. You make it easy for them to learn about candidates and issues. Plus you can serve as a conduit for campaigns to speak with voters on specific issues. Give it a try. It’s fun! If you would like to learn more about canvassing please contact us at 215-328-9104 or email our canvassing coordinator.
Volunteer for a Campaign
All campaigns are anxious to recruit volunteers to support their efforts. You will be welcomed with open arms and can do the type of work that you’d like whether that’s contacting voters directly or working behind the scenes. You may choose a campaign because of a specific issue, a personal connection you have with a candidate, or simply because you care about the future of our country and want to help. Contact us to discuss your interests and we will help you find a campaign to volunteer with.
Be a Candidate
One of the most important ways to give back to the community is to run for office. Your opinions are heard as you stake out positions on how to improve our community. The most visible positions are Township Council and the Hatboro-Horsham School Board. But there are other elected roles such as constable. We strive to recruit highly qualified candidates for all elected offices. Please contact us to learn more about running as a candidate for office to represent Horsham.
